One (good) disease leads to another

Not at all aexcellentsickness, fair a play on words. I am speaking approximately Parkinson’s Sickness nowadays as a well loved press headline caught my attention. The news tale got much of the study right, apart from that is states the research as “confirming” a link between Parkinson’s and Melanoma. In fact, the study supports the link, and it supports previous research, but in the actual journal submission, the researchers do make a note approximately caution when interpreting the results which implies anything but a confirmation. The warning has to do with the data that was reviewed in that it wasn’t all collected in the same manner.

Still, let me share a few things in case you are unawares. Parkinson’s Sickness is often associated with tremors and gait disturbance and is more complicated than a similar condition called fundamental tremor (ET is a progressive neurological chaos as well). Parkinson’s is chronic and does worsen over time, i.e is progressive, but it is too degenerative in that the symptoms become disabling. In PD the patient may too have problems with thinking and speech.

Parkinson’s sickness does not have a definitive cause and is often considered idiopathic – meaning there is not clear cause! It does involve a lack of the neurotransmitter dopamine – it fair isn’t known precisely why the cells that produce dopamine die off in these persons. The maximum common treatment is with a drug called levodopa which the body turns into dopamine. Dopamine helps with movement, thinking, emotions and feelings of pleasure.

For some time, there has been concern approximately a higher than normal incidence of the maximum serious skin cancer, melanoma , in patients with PD. (other skin cancer types are basal cell and squamous cell) There has been previous research of the issue with two theories. One is that for some reasons PD patients are fair more prone to it (making me reckon maybe dopamine is a protective factor?) or the medicine to treat it was itself putting the patient at risk.

What Kind of Stress?

Any action that occurs in our bodies on a cellular level will abandon a residue, whether you will, or a trace of activity which is referred to as oxidative stress. We have oxidative stress fair from being lively, but it is too exacerbated and accelerated by exposure to toxins and by inflammation from illness and even from exercise. Left unchecked it can cause releaseradical buildup and DNA hurt and sickness.

What you may not know is that the body has a mechanism for clearing up this hurt and for the maximum portion, oxidative stress is normal and not a cause for alarm. The body has its own small “pac men” (are you ancient sufficient to know what video recreation I am referring to?) and they are antioxidants.

We hear approximately antioxidants all the time, but they don’t start in our diet they start in our body. In other words, we have endogenous antioxidants that clean up this residue. I know that there are five main ones, but the one that I am maximum familiar with is called superoxide dismutase which is abbreviated sod.

Two things can happen that lead to sickness processes from releaseradical hurt. The diseases include cancer and cardiovascular sickness. Either the stresses are too much for the endogenous antioxidants to clear up or the body is exposed to other elements that really reduce the quantity of natural antioxidants in the body (the chemicals in tobacco smoke can do that).

Either way, it is vital for us to too take advantage of exterior or exogenous sources of antioxidants which can be found in our fruits, vegetables and grains – and a plant based diet. The science that supports the positive effect of introducing antioxidants and phytochemicals is in large portion related to foods, not supplements. At minimum one study found supplements to be harmful in smokers, even though they are antioxidant deficient.

A diet that is tall in fruits and vegetables and all the vitamins they provide can guard the heart and brain from the effects of cellular hurt. This hurt would include problems with b

USA v Canada

This post is approximately arthritis. Arthritis is a condition of the joints. It includes swelling, inflammation, pain and immobility. It is a chronic sickness condition that contains at minimum 20 subtypes. The maximum common is osteoarthritis.Previous blog posts address this sickness condition more in depth.

I return to the issue of arthritis nowadays because of a conclusion offered by scientists in Canada who reviewed statistical information and learned that the US had higher rates of arthritis than persons in Canada. Another fascinating thing I learned from this study andDr. Elizabeth Bradleyis this acronym AAL. It stands for arthritis attributable activity limitations. Fascinating.

First let me define two terms:
Prevalenceis the quantity of persons who have a certain condition at any given time, like a snapshot.
Incidenceis the persons who will have the sickness or the modern cases of sickness – so incidence cancer does not include people who are living with cancer already, but those who were fair diagnosed.

The research study from the Toronto Western Research Institute found that Americans had higher prevalence of arthritis and disability associated with it, or AAL. It is not gender equal – the discrepency was higher between American and Canadian women.

Dr. Badley concludes that this is due to the higher prevalence of two other conditions in the USA>Anyone care to guess what they might be? Obesity and Sedentary Activity. She well-known that American women are particularly overweight and inactive compared to Canadian women but too to American men.

I did a rapid search, using the USA’s health survey reported on the CDC website and too the Public Health Agency of Canada. Both combine overweight and obesity in their data collection and the genuine numbers are USA 32-35% vs Canada 23-25%.

Why does that matter? According to the CDC, WHO, and any reputable health organization, one of the modifiable or controllable risk factors for arthritis is obesity. The CDCs website really recommends that people be

Weight Control – when the right things stop working

Warning: There are no rapid fixes here – there are no rapid fixes anywhere – prepare for some bitter reality.

A majority of people profit weight as they age. Men and Women, fit and unfit. People who have been engaging in unhealthy behaviors maximum of their lives will have a BETTER response to changing that behavior now than the fit person will have in addressing their sudden metamorphosis. Reckon approximately it this way. Whether you already moderate your calories and exercise maximum days of the week with vigorous activity on a excellent many of those days, AND you weight train – what is left? Your body is in fine shape – or it was -

What whether you haven’t changed a thing, but your body changes besides?

You are the people I am talking to nowadays. The rest of you, whether you have struggled all your lives and continue to struggle with achieving and maintaining a healthy weight there are many blog posts to peruse in my archives and plenty of assist through theCooper Instituteand others, for losing those pounds once and for all – you best get on that.

Instead I am writing to the people who don’t know what has happened because nothing happened. Many of my friends and some coworkers have questioned me approximately this middle aged weight profit and as I am in my forties, I expect it will happen to me as well.

No matter what “we” do it seems, biological changes will occur. This in NO WAY means that you have no options for avoiding the weight profit or weight redistribution, but you will have to make some sacrifices and approach this as whether you are again the person who has weight to lose. In fact, some weight or obesity control experts propose that we get ahead of the changes, particularly women confronting menopause. (Men are not immune. A study published in 1997 saw the same thing happen in middle aged men who were and continued to be runners!)

There are some theories and some science behind why this occurs for both sexes. These include fluctuating hormone levels, but too the very nature of shifting priorities and demands as w

The Saga Ends and A New Goal is Born

I really don’t have to process this anymore. My writings and daily pondering has given me the answers that I needed. I know what my mistakes were and what the challenges are – and I know what I want to do next. At this point, I am only telling a tale, but it is not a tale without lessons – or humor- or trials, so let me go on…

One of the reasons I wanted to run a moment marathon was to eat pizza. Of course, I wanted to feel the euphoria of finishing – there has been nothing like it in my life – but I too recollect it being the one day that I didn’t at all consider calories. When I was hungry I got up and ate something. My favorite foods are pizza and peanut butter, but I have not had pizzeria pizza in forever and two days. When I completed the Sarasota Marathon my friends chose our celebratory restaurant and I gladly accompanied them, but there was no pizza. So it was on my mind as I trained. I too know that my Mom want to see me eat pizza – because she is Italian and that is what Italian Mom’s want. So my crazy motivating reward was to meet my mom on Sunday and say I ran another marathon Mom lets go get some pizza. (and my sister too). I had even gone to the local pizzeria a few days before and obtained a take out menu for encouragement. So Saturday night I thought I better call my Mom because she might make plans and THEN what. I emailed her instead though – said I would be calling her the next day and want to see her. Of course, I couldn’t say what or why or when because I was ONLY doing this whether I succeeded. Mom called straight absent – she had PLANS. So I thought I was going to weep, I nearly did weep, but sucked it up. It was fair one of those things – though I thought, maybe I could wait until later and still have pizza with mom somehow.

The rest of the evening left me worrying approximately my hip flexor and my foot, what to wear, what to carry with me in my two small pockets, what to place in the gear bag (12 dollars for my flushing mass
